What about water? From the NYTimes story about preparing for the imminent collapse of civilization:
“Your safe haven must be self-sufficient and capable of growing some kind of food,” Mr. Biggs writes. “It should be well-stocked with seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc.”
Of course the Times puts coverage of potential societal collapse due to peak oil and/or economic meltdown in the Styles section (or so I’m gathering from the URL of the article).

The price of agricultural land is already soaring for related reasons; the problem with setting up a “lifeboat” is in deciding where to do it. You want to avoid the roving mobs that everyone foresees–but how?
I’m surprised most of these people seem to eschew guns. The expectation that society will collapse seems at odds with the expectation that they can hold on to their long-term food supply without shotguns and a lot of ammunition (and concrete walls with razor wire around their property, and…). It’s a funny combination of pessimism about civilization and optimism about human nature, but I guess that’s nothing new — Rousseau believed the same thing, right? I’m skeptical.
Right–that’s why the whole idea of a “lifeboat” is so absurd. As for guns: maybe they would help, but if there is really starvation, then a group of people with more (or bigger) guns will soon turn up.
